Opening Remarks

Don’t worry, I’m not talking about the actual election, candidates, and parties…I haven’t followed it in some time now, since probably early 2021, maybe 2022. I really enjoyed politics at one point, but maybe the polarization, lack of positivity, or my control what you control outlook, keeps me away from it. This article is more about the concept, obstacles, and privilege. Hopefully, way different from other articles you’ve read over the last few days.

A few observations about the logistics of the election, not the candidates:

It feels like a prehistoric process

  • We’re quick to use a social security number and other identification in so many ways, yet we can’t figure out efficient, safe, and fair elections. Is it possible that maybe we don’t want to make it efficient for all eligible willing people to vote? Is it a positive to have a non-scalable system to control and make it as secure as possible? Or is that a fallacy?

  • Early voting can be just as hard or harder than voting on Election Day from what I have seen and heard. That’s broken.

  • Identification and security against fraud and data theft still has a long way to go, but we seem to separate voting even from life/death/critical functions of our lives. Biometrics, chips, etc. there must be a way to make it more efficient.

  • Tradition and fairness do not equal out of touch, slow, and painful lines or high levels of inefficiency, there is an AND there somewhere

  • The pace of improvement since 2000’s debacle is pathetic - where are those “hanging chads”?

Voting privilege:

  • The election rhetoric was tough to see/hear, and I haven’t even closely followed it, but it’s hard to stay away from—it’s everywhere you look. I felt a profound sense of duty to get out and vote. So many don’t have the right, ability, or will, which makes it so important to get out and cast your voice, regardless of your frustration or level of disconnection.

  • The energy and pride about the process may be one thing that can be used to help unify us some day—it was amazing to see so many people who come from different towns, demographics, professions, all go do the same thing on the same day.

  • When traveling abroad, it’s amazing to hear how much interest there is in the US Election for President. The hype is real, especially the more controversial the candidates or policy debates. The world still cares about the US leadership and direction.

Voting as a function

  • When it’s not a popular vote, it does make you think why this system was implemented over 200 years ago, how it made some sense then, and maybe how much it’s a more irrelevant method today. It would be interesting to see a study on all the democratic voting systems and see what kind of satisfaction and efficiency there is.

  • Voting turnout will reduce significantly over the next 10 years if we don’t evolve this traditional process in a productive and meaningful way. Voting will be dominated by older citizens in that case. Tomorrow’s twenties and thirties aren’t going to the polls to participate in the perceived given “right to vote”. Voting in a democratic free country is a privilege that I hope we don’t forget. Tik Tok won’t be where we vote, but there is a better way out there.

Voting has way more power than selecting tomorrow’s leaders of our communities, rather, it’s a referendum on our commitment to our future with a desire to build a better tomorrow. Without improving voter turnout from all demographics, I see turnout increasingly being tied to motives and that can be dangerous when only controversial motives drive turnout, versus the general civic duty and patriotism that once moved our nation. I don’t know what the solution would look like, but it may be tied heavily to a Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Reagan level of vision that changes our future, bringing along our youth, the disillusioned, or demotivated.

A few takeaways

The United States of America is built on confidence and hope…I do wonder how that is compounding, or shrinking, compared to even 4, 8, 12+ years ago. Looking at the data in American confidence and hope between pre-9/11, post, 4 years post-Great Recession, pre-pandemic, and current point, would be interesting to see where we were, and where we are going, and the correlating technological and societal changes.

And now time to back to my leadership lane.
