Take a Step Back & Look at What You’re Building

Leverage Your Efforts, Ideas, & Results Through Intentionality
Leaders can get ultra-focused, which is a good thing, but don’t forget to remind yourself what you’re building and how you’re getting there. It’s easy to get off track in the wrong direction when you don’t keep your journey and destination in mind. Regularly, it’s important to look at your entire business from more of an outsiders’ perspective.
When you’re taking a look at your business health, it’s important to assess your entire business, not only the obviously broken, successful, or questionable areas. Typically, you’re head-down making things happen with specific areas of work, which again is great, but it’s important to step out and look at the entire business on a regular basis.
When
How often? Your frequency should really be as much as necessary to give you a more holistic, strategic view, and what it takes to allow you to connect your daily work to your vision and aligned strategy. At minimum, quarterly, with a deep dive in Q4 in preparation for Q1 of the next year. Monthly can be helpful for founders in a fast moving and constant season of iteration. Annually is clearly too far out, and not enough of a view into your business, and really should only be considered for an even deeper dive, rethinking your strategy, next year planning, and major adjustments.
Why
All of this hard work you’re putting in your business deserves your attention. If you’re spending 100% of your time in your business, you’re missing the value, you’re missing the journey, you have to enjoy the ride. The hard work is much more meaningful when you remind yourself what you’re building. On your business is just as important, especially if you want to scale beyond today’s boundaries.
Remember your why
Sense check your path and direction
Alignment of all aspects of your work, vision, and strategy
Ideation and revelation - spark new ideas and see what’s really going on
You can’t afford to not keep the big picture in mind - this is one way you can do that
Who
Founders, owners, entrepreneurs, executives, and leaders
It doesn’t matter if you own the place, run the place, or you lead a small team. This is your business, and you need to operate that way.
How
Dedicate enough time to do a thorough review and give yourself time to think. It’s usually at least a half day for a simple business in the early stages with little size and complexity. For operations with multiple associates, clients, products or services, reports, departments or groups, etc., this can be 1-2 days, or you may need a week blocked off, which is not realistic or many, or a few sessions which can be much more realistic for scheduling.
Schedule it at a time you know you and any team members can commit to it- stick with it. You and your business deserves this. If you’re thinking, “I don’t know how I could afford to do this”, you need to shift your lens, and think, “I don’t know how I could operate without this.”
