Sometimes, Leadership is Giving People Space

Suffocation, micro-management, authoritarian...what about space?

Intro

Not giving them every every idea, not critiquing every little thing, not being so in their business so they can’t breathe…what if we let our leaders work?

The Story

The distinction could be where they are in their journey, if they are a low performer, if they are a high flyer outperforming expectations, or if they have high potential, yet aren’t quite there yet for their role…if you have that clarity, that could certainly guide your approach. But that’s just it. It’s your approach. If you’re approach is the same with every single team member you will have challenges. When, not if.

Aligning your approach can often be as important as what your approach is, because if you’re not meeting your people where they are, and trying to lead all the same, you’re going to leave people behind.

Fair is not equal, equal does not mean fair. Some people look at the highest performers having so much latitude and autonomy, and they tend to forget experience, performance, and that trust, have been built over time. It didn’t come from day one, it didn’t come from the spot the others were in. All that is built through being tested over a period of time.

For those who are less accomplished with less trust, often get less latitude. Seem simple? Many leaders are terrible at managing people for what they need.

Time is another factor, it’s not the only factor.

What you’re doing is leading people where they are, helping them where they want to go, and where you need them to go in the business. You hear phrases thrown around like with Ken Blanchard’s Situational Leadership. That’s in the book, but do you actually intentionally practice it? You can start to see the art and the science come together in live leadership, by using these kinds of principles, putting them to work by supporting your people with what they need, and where they need you.

Closing

Leaving And for what they They need it is leader leadership.
